Lido di Venezia is a green corner, just 15 minutes away from tourist-packed Venice. In Lido, you will enjoy the real atmosphere of Italy.

The literal translation of the name Lido is Venice Shore. The place is not the most popular among English-speaking tourists, and, undeservedly so.

How to get to Lido di Venezia island?

You can reach the Lido S.M.E. stop from Venice by vaporetto. There is also a direct route from the Aeroporto di Venezia – Aeroporto Marco Polo Tessera, VCE by boat from the Alilaguna company.

For travelers who prefer driving, the ferry Linea 17 (parking is free on Lido) is a suitable option.

What to expect from Lido?

• The sea. Primarily, the island invites beach relaxation. Lido is the gentle waves of the Adriatic and clean beaches.

• Walks. Gran Viale Santa Maria Elisabetta is the main street of the island. A promenade from the central square to the beaches on the other side of Lido.

Hotels and villas are nestled in greenery, especially contrasting with Venice. You will enjoy views of cozy courtyards and picturesque streets with restaurants and summer terraces. The island's architecture is very diverse.

• Food. Of course, Quattro formaggi pizza, seafood pasta, wine, and Aperol—because this is Italy.

• Bicycle. Definitely worth cycling around the island. There are plenty of rental points, available in many hotels.

Lido di Venezia – sea and beaches

Lido di Venezia is primarily a seaside resort. The island is famous for its fine golden sand beaches and the clean, warm sea.

You can reach the central public beach of Lido within 10 minutes from the Lido S.M.E. stop. The beach is free, but you can rent umbrellas and loungers. Or you can settle right on the sand. Note that during peak season, particularly in July and August, the beach gets quite crowded.

There are also paid beaches available, with noticeably fewer people.

The coast also has many "wild sections." The beach and sea there are just as good but lack beach infrastructure and lifeguards.

What to see on Lido di Venezia island?

The island has fewer attractions compared to Venice, but you will definitely enjoy visiting them.

• Church of San Nicolò – the main relic of the island. Its construction dates back to 1044, and since 1100, the marble altar of the church houses the relics of the Saint. The church building is baroque in style, with a strict silhouette and minimal decorations. You can walk to it along the island's waterfront.

• Fortress of San Nicolò, located in the northeast part of Lido.

• Venetian Lagoon. The island's port is filled with yachts and ships, offering memorable tours around the island. During these tours, you will enjoy beautiful views of Lido di Venezia and neighboring islands.

• Grand Hotel des Bains. A hotel with grand architecture. It was here that Thomas Mann wrote "Death in Venice" in 1911, and half a century later, the hotel became the setting for its famous film adaptation. Throughout its history, the hotel hosted guests like Coco Chanel, Winston Churchill, Henry Ford, Elizabeth Taylor, Robert De Niro, among others.

• Nicelli Airport (an unusual modernist building).

• Jewish Cemetery, small but interesting attractions.

• Malamocco and Alberoni are villages in the vicinity of Lido, imbued with the atmosphere of real Italy.

What to see nearby in the Venetian Lagoon?

• Chioggia, an ancient town in the south of the lagoon. Streets, bridges, canals—Venice in miniature, although it appeared much earlier. At the beginning of its history, Chioggia was a haven for criminals and fishermen. Fishing quarters still occupy part of the town, distinguished by simple constructions and coziness. The streets are filled with restaurants offering fresh seafood and other traditional Italian dishes. On Thursdays, Chioggia hosts a fish market (the largest in Europe).

• The islands of Burano, Murano, and Torcello. Trips to these islands will also diversify your holiday.

Traditionally in September, the Venice Film Festival La Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica takes place on the island. Accommodation here needs to be booked in advance during this period. Many wish to attend this splendid celebration, and prices soar.

Where to stay?

The location should be chosen based on the type of vacation you plan. On the lagoon side, you can enjoy sunsets. The opposite side is suitable for those who prefer the sea and beach.

The island has many hotels, depending on your budget and preferences. Besides hotels, tourists have the option to stay in villas, which usually come with the bonus of a beautiful garden.

Apartments are a more budget-friendly option, convenient for families and those planning a long holiday.

Bear in mind that resort life thrives around the main street.

Restaurants and supermarkets

The majority of restaurants and pizzerias are located on Viale Street and its adjacent areas.

When choosing a venue, it's also worth considering where the locals go rather than tourists. You're more likely to enjoy a great meal there.

Further from the center, you'll find many such cafes and also stores with delicacies.

A market operates twice a week (it's best to check specific days and times locally).

It's noteworthy that there's almost no street food on the island, and supermarkets close by 8:00 PM.

Prices on the island are more affordable than in Venice. This applies to hotels, housing rentals, and transportation, as well as basic restaurant bills.

There is no need for transport in Lido. However, the bus network is well developed, which is convenient for trips around the area, and bicycles are popular.
